Violence Against Women (VAW) remains a serious issue worldwide, including in the Philippines. Data from the 2022 National Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS) by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) shows that nearly 1 in 5 Filipino women have experienced emotional, physical, or sexual violence from their intimate partners. This highlights the urgent need for effective laws and initiatives to protect women from abuse.
The
Anti-Violence Against Women and their Children (VAWC) Act of 2004, or Republic
Act (R.A.) No. 9262, is a key law addressing this issue. It defines and
penalizes various forms of abuse, including physical, sexual, psychological,
and economic violence. The law provides women and children with legal remedies,
such as protection orders and access to support services. Its role is
emphasized annually during the 18-day Campaign to End Violence Against Women.
Laws
like R.A. 9262, R.A. 8353, and R.A. 11313 are critical in addressing VAW. They
not only hold offenders accountable but also provide protection and support for
victims. Continued enforcement of these laws and raising public awareness are
necessary steps toward reducing violence and promoting safety for women and
children.
