Every October, the Philippines observes National Indigenous Peoples Month, a time to reflect on the diverse cultures and traditions of Indigenous Peoples (IPs). This year also marks the 27th anniversary of the Indigenous Peoples’ Rights Act (IPRA) of 1997, a law dedicated to protecting the rights of IPs, especially their ancestral lands, cultural practices, and self-determination (Republic Act No. 8371, 1997). With the theme, “Mga Katutubo at Katutubong Dunong: Pahalagahan, Pangalagaan at Parangalan,” the celebration calls for valuing, safeguarding, and honoring the wisdom and traditions of indigenous communities.

The month-long observance highlights the challenges and contributions of IPs to the nation. Many indigenous groups still face issues like land disputes, limited access to services, and threats to their cultural heritage (NCIP, 2024). Events such as cultural showcases, storytelling sessions, and educational forums help bridge the gap between IPs and the wider public.

Commemorating this month also underscores the importance of enforcing IP rights. While the IPRA provides legal protection, the reality on the ground often shows gaps in implementation, with ancestral lands and resources still under threat. By bringing attention to these issues, the celebration inspires collective action from government agencies, organizations, and individuals. Advocating for stronger policy enforcement and ensuring indigenous voices are included in decision-making processes are essential steps to safeguarding their rights (NCIP, 2024).

As individuals, we can contribute by learning about indigenous communities, supporting their initiatives, and amplifying their stories. National Indigenous Peoples Month is a reminder that valuing and nurturing indigenous knowledge is not just about remembering the past—it’s about building a future where their rights, traditions, and contributions are fully recognized and respected.
